The National Committee representatives for Auckland are: Helen Mary Walker.
Welcome to the Auckland Region of the New Zealand College of Midwives (NZCOM). The Auckland region has the highest number of births (23,280 in 2010) accounting for 36% of all births registered In New Zealand, consequently we have the greatest number of midwives working across the region.
We are proud to live in, work in, and contribute to an incredibly diverse, youthful, multi-cultural population. Half of our women identify with two or more ethnicities and around 10% of women have English as a second language.
The NZCOM Auckland Region represents Auckland members and is the largest (by membership numbers) of the 10 NZCOM regions. Members include midwives, consumers, students and affiliated groups. Members work in a variety of settings in a region that contains three District Health Boards as well as a number of Primary Birthing Units.
The Auckland region keeps its members informed of current issues by way of monthly regional meetings. We also keep our members informed of current events via our global email. If you wish to keep up-to-date with what is happening in your region, make sure your email and membership details are updated via your profile on the NZCOM website.
The Auckland Regional meetings are held at our Resource Centre, Yarnton House, 14 Erson Ave, Royal Oak, on the first Tuesday of every month except January. Meetings start at 7.00pm, members are welcome to arrive earlier for nibbles and networking. Our meetings not only cover regional business, but also an educational component with interesting speakers. Our March Regional Meeting, “A Bloody Good Night”, was a fascinating look at anaemia in pregnancy, blood transfusion and sensitisation/antibodies; speakers were a specialist haematologist and a specialist transfusion nurse.
Our Regional Resource Centre is open 5 days a week, from 9.00am till 3.00pm. We have midwifery and counselling clinics, and the Centre is also used for Midwifery Standards Reviews, Pasifika Midwives Fono, Calmbirth Antenatal classes and various midwifery education workshops. The Centre also stocks resources and publications.
