Have been providing care for women and families in the Lakes and greater Central region now for over three years and during this time we have worked with over 300 families. As a practice we think it’s important that women and their families are aware of the choices that are available for them during what is an exciting but what can also be a daunting time for them.

Pregnancy is a time of great excitement, great change and at times great anxiety. It is a time where as a woman and a family you want to have excellent memories and feel that your experience was all it could be. In New Zealand a majority of pregnant women are well and have a midwife as their Lead Maternity Carer (LMC). The relationship you have with your midwife is a unique experience for you and her and because of this it is important that you feel comfortable with who is providing your care and that you are involved in every step of this process. Fortunately in the Lakes and greater Central region there are a number of midwifery practices available for you to choose from. Once you have confirmed your pregnancy you can access the names and contact details of these different midwives by asking at your local Medical Practice for a list of the midwives practicing in your area, or you can access that information via this website. Of course you can also ask your friends and family who they used and gauge from them whether that midwife sounds like a good fit for you. What is important is that your midwife works well for you so it is reasonable that you meet and interview a few from different practices to get the one who is the right fit. Remembering that your can change your midwife at anytime during your pregnancy if the relationship you are building with your midwife no longer fits your needs.

Why choose a Sage Femme midwife for your care?

  • Sage Femme Midwives is a completely free service
  • You can choose your own midwife
  • You have the same midwife for the antenatal care during your pregnancy, at the birth and the postnatal care after your baby is born. If your midwife is not available a backup midwife – whom you will meet during your pregnancy – will be provided
  • We come to you – all your pregnancy and postnatal visits are done in your own home. These visits are about an hour long and provide time for questions and planning to meet you and your family’s needs
  • For a normal pregnancy, a Sage Femme Midwife can provide all your care, including a pregnancy test, ordering blood tests and ultrasound scans, and any prescriptions you may need for your pregnancy
  • If during your pregnancy it becomes apparent that specialist care is required your Sage Femme Midwife will make the appropriate referrals
  • We will accommodate your health beliefs. Sage Femme Midwives use conventional and complementary remedies
  • We provide family/whanau centred care
  • Birth options include homebirth, water birth, birthing in the local birthing units and if indicated in the base hospital
