Midwifery First Year of Practice

The MFYP Programme (the Programme) is a national programme available to all New Zealand registered midwifery graduates who meet the eligibility criteria, irrespective of work setting. The New Zealand College of Midwives (the NZCOM) is contracted by the funder, Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ), to provide the programme nationally in accordance with the Programme Specification.
| The Programme vision is: |
| ‘New Zealand Midwifery graduates enthusiastically commence their careers in New Zealand: well-supported, safe, skilled and confident in their practice; meeting the needs of maternity service consumers, providers and communities; and building a sustainable base for the New Zealand registered midwives workforce into the future’. |
The Programme Framework and Components:

The Programme is not a programme in the usual sense of a programme, for example the pre-registration midwifery education programme. It is better described as a graduate midwife’s individual first year of practice support, education and professional development plan or strategy that will help prepare her for her first Midwifery Standards Review. Rather than being totally prescriptive or rigid in how it is applied, the Programme allows each participant the flexibility to individually determine their needs.
