Programme Update

It is amazing to realise that the first year of the Midwifery First Year of Practice Pilot Programme (the Programme) has now drawn to a close for the 2007 participants and the 2008 participants are more than half way through their year.  The NZCOM has recently been advised that the Programme is to be funded from 2009 and that the NZCOM will be the Programme National Coordination provider.

This fantastic news for the profession and a big thank you must go to both the participating graduate and mentor midwives and to the sector for their support of the Programme. The NZCOM understands there are to be some changes to the Programme and will communicate these once they are known.

2008 Programme Participants

A total of 102 graduate midwives entered the Register of Midwives in December 2007 and April 2008, all of whom applied for their Annual Practising Certificate. Of these 99 (97%) applied for and were accepted into the Programme. One withdrew prior to Programme commencement and two have withdrawn during the first quarter - one for personal reasons and the other has left the profession. Currently 96 graduates are participating in the Programme which gives a retention rate of 97% to date

Enrolments for the 2008 Programme closed on the 31st of March 2008.

2007 Programme Participants

Of the 90 graduates initially enrolled in the Programme for 2007, 86 completed their Programme. This gives an overall Programme retention rate of 95.5% for 2007, which is fantastic.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish the 2007participants all the best for their ongoing midwifery careers and hope it is everything they wish it to be.

The following statements from two graduates, reinforces the value of the Programme, in particular the one on one mentoring.

‘… my mentor has encouraged me to reflect on my experiences and to often seek out my own answers but always with the knowledge I can rely on her guidance if needed.

My confidence as a midwife has continually grown over these last months and that can be directly attributed to having … as my mentor.’
