Welcome to the NZCOM Education pages.

Midwives who hold annual practising certificates are requried to complete a number of compulsory and elective ongoing education points over a three year period as set down by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand. 

The NZCOM Education team looks forward to meeting College members at the workshops.  We recommend that you register early for workshops and forums as some have limited places.

Technical Skills Workshops

The two-day Technical Skills Workshops are one of the compulsory components of the Recertification Programme. All midwives are required to attend the full two day workshop at least once in every three years.

These interactive workshops will include the following topics over the next three years as per the Midwifery Council requirement:

  1. Fetal Assessment and Wellbeing
  2. Pharmacology and prescribing in midwifery practice
  3. Third stage of labour
  4. Midwifery emergency refresher – in the context of home birth or primary maternity facility or any context where there may be no immediate support, specifically undiagnosed breech, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, postpartum haemorrhage.

Cost: Self-employed LMC midwives $145 per day or a total 2 day workshop cost of $290. Employed midwives $175 per day or a total 2 day workshop cost of $350.

Midwifery Council Approval: NZCOM are an approved provider of the workshops which are a compulsory component of the Midwifery Council of NZ Recertification Programme.

On receipt of your registration form and payment you will receive a letter confirming your place at the workshop. All pre-reading, venue and time of the workshop will be sent to you 2 weeks before the workshop date.

 

The Practicalities of Being a Mentor Midwife Workshop

This one-day workshop is open for all midwives to attend. The aim of the workshop is to explore the core principles of mentorship and introduce concepts to enable mentorship relationships to be formed and flourish. The workshop explores:

  • Concepts of mentoring in the New Zealand context of midwifery practice
  • Adult learning principles and links with mentoring relationships
  • Opportunities for creating reflective practice
  • A mentor midwives toolkit.

This workshop is also a pre-requisite for midwives who have agreed to mentor a newly registered midwife participating in the Midwifery First Year of Practice Programme (MFYP), and must have been completed prior to the mentor midwife commencing the MFYP Programme.

Cost: There is no fee to attend the workshop

Midwifery Council Approval: 5 elective education points

Rural Mentoring Workshop: A midwifery perspective - Click here for dates in your area

The aim of this one-day workshop is to enable midwives to explore the core principles of mentorship and introduce the concepts which enable a mentorship relationship to be formed and flourish in rural midwifery communities. The workshop will provide opportunities for participants to share your own experiences of practicing within a rural environment and supporting a rural colleague through mentoring.

This workshop is a pre-requisite for midwives who have agreed to mentor a rural midwifery colleague enrolled on the Midwifery Recruitment and Retention Programme.

SmokeChange - ABC/NRT Workshops

SmokeChange Link midwives will be hosting a two hour update on the New Zealand Guidelines for Smoking Cessation with a two hour ABC/NRT workshop in your region. For more information click here.


Antenatal Screening Workshops

The National Screening Unit (NSU) are funding the NZ College of Midwives and the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP)to jointly deliver a series of inter-professional educational workshops around the country. The workshops provide an opportunity for midwives and gps to further enhance skills, knowledge and understanding in relation to antenatal screening for Down syndrome & other conditions.
