Our Personnel

The NZCOM employs a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who is accountable to the National Committee, five professional advisory and eight administrative personnel, as well a number of contracted personnel.

Karen Guilliland, RGON, RM, MA (Midwifery), MNZM

Chief Executive Officer

Karen has been a long time leader of midwifery in New Zealand and has significant experience in management, governance and strategic roles. Within the health sector this has included board directorships, advisory group membership and participation in policy development for maternity services.

Karen is currently the Asia Pacific representative for the International Confereration of Midwives (ICM) and has been awarded membership of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM).

Norma Campbell, RM, MA (Midwifery)

Midwifery Advisor – Quality & Sector Liaison (Full time)

Norma has extensive clinical midwifery experience and has been the national midwifery advisor for eight years. She has been involved in multidisciplinary work across the health sector, is the NZCOM DHB liaison and interface person and manages the Midwifery Standards Review (quality assurance process for midwives) and Resolutions Committee (complaints process for women).

Norma has recently been awarded membership of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM).

Elaine Gray, RM, PG in Adult Teaching

Midwifery Advisor - Continuing Education (Full time)

Elaine has a wealth of experience as an educator within the maternity services. From her extensive clinical experience she has been able to develop post registration midwifery education in a range of settings and currently delivers education programmes nationally. Elaine has been instramental in developing many of the workshops provided by the College and is currently undertaking a Masters in Midwifery with Otago Polytechnic.

Lesley Dixon, RM, MA (Midwifery)

Midwifery Advisor - Practice Advice and Research (Full time)

Lesley joined the College team in 2007 with 21 years experience as a practicing midwife in the UK, Germany and New Zealand. Having worked both as self employed LMC and in employed positions Lesley has a good understanding of clinical practice issues. Lesley is also a PhD candidate at Victoria University and is currently involved in several College research projects.

Alison Eddy, RM, PG Diploma of Public Health

Midwifery Advisor Professional Projects and Contracts (Part time)

Alison's work with project and contract management for the Ministry of Health, along with her experiences as a self employed and employed midwife, has enabled her to manage a variety of contracts and projects that reflect the professionalism of midwifery in New Zealand.

Ann Shaw, RGON, B Nursing

Midwifery First Year of Practice (MFYP) National Coordinator

(Full time)

Ann has experience in regional and national coordination, contract management, project management and the development and delivery of training packages and education resources for the Ministry of Health and as an independent contractor.

Hayley McMurtrie and Ali Jones

Communications Team

Hayley has 14 years marketing experience in the UK and New Zealand with many years within the health sector. Hayley manages the NZCOM website

Maria Scott

Publications Advisor

Maria has worked as a journalist and editor on newspapers and magazines in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Maria edits Midwifery News and is responsible for a range of other College publications.
