Services Offered
This list outlines the services that NZCOM provides to members.
- A midwifery focus and voice for midwives and women
- Individual and collective advice for members about: midwifery contracts, access agreements, service contracts, provision of midwifery care, payment, working situations, professional standards, ethical matters
- Professional indemnity insurance, legal advice and administration
- Presentation and support for members at Multi Discplinary Tribunal hearings, midwifery practice inquiries and reviews
- Publication of Midwifery News (quarterly) and the NZCOM Journal (usually April & October) to keep members informed
- Consultation of national midwifery contracts for maternity services
- Consultation of the national maternity services contract (Section 88) with Ministry of Health
- Submissions on current maternity service and womans' health issues
- Advice and consultation on the development of continuity of care and midwifery practice upholding the ICM/WHO Definition of the Midwife for midwife and midwife managers
- Professional representation to government agencies particularly the Ministries of Health, Women’s Affairs and Education, the Health and Disability Commissioner and women’s health consumer bodies
- National and regional input and monitoring of midwifery educational curricula through polytechnics, universities, NZ Qualifications Authority and the Midwifery Council of New Zealand
- Education forums for midwifery educators and the profession
- Postgraduate midwifery updates and reskilling courses
- Accreditation of postgraduate courses
- Data collection and interpretation of midwifery services, trends and statistics
- Liaison with and consultation to the Midwifery and Maternity Provider Organisation (MMPO)
- Liaison with and consultation to the Midwifery Employee Representation Advisory Service (MERAS)
- Liaison and advice to the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) on midwifery employment issues
- Nomination body for representation to statutory committees
- Regional and national consultation and input into health policy with the District Health Boards, Ministry of Health and facility and health service providers
- Liaison with health authorities and health agencies in developing priorities and policies in maternity services
- Development of maternity service provider specifications
- Library and reference resources
- Media promotion and marketing
- Membership of the International Confederation of Midwives
- International recognition and consultation with the World Health Organisation, United Nations, other midwifery organisations and international consumer organisations
- Research collaboration, advice, liasion and promotion through the Joan Donley Midwifery Research Collaboration
