Joining the NZCOM

The New Zealand College of Midwives (NZCOM) is the professional organisation for midwives, representing over 80% of practicing midwives in New Zealand. The majority of pregnant women in New Zealand are choosing a midwife as a Lead Maternity Carer. NZCOM offer information, education and advice to women, midwives, District Health Boards and the Ministry of Health regarding midwifery issues. The College encourages consumer membership and involvement, and makes places on all of its national and regional committees for consumer membership.  The College works in partnership with Maori membership, which has representation on the Colleges National Committee.

As a member of the College you have the opportunity to contribute to all the representations the College makes to government, health organisations, consumer groups and the public. You also have input into the development of practice guidelines, consensus statements and midwifery policy.

You can take an active role in supporting your local midwifery community and join with consumers and their organisations to support initiatives that enhance the lives of mothers and babies.

Your membership assists the College to maintain the status of midwives and their fundamental role in the maternity services. You also help protect the gains that New Zealand midwifery has made for midwives, women and their families.
