Grant Information
Health Workforce New Zealand Grants for midwives undertaking post graduate education
Midwives who are engaged in formal post graduate education at Level 8 or above on the NZQA framework are entitled to apply for grants towards the cost of fees. These grants are available from Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) and are intended to subsidise the cost of fees/travel. Midwives who are planning to enrol or have enrolled in post graduate study between 1 January 2012 and 30 June 2012 will be eligible to apply. NZCOM is administering the grants on behalf of HWNZ.
Please note that contrary to the information contained with the Grants notification letter below, Massey University will not be offering post graduate midwifery education in 2012
The criteria for accessing the grants include:
- NZ registered midwife with a current Annual Practising Certificate
- NZ citizen or resident
- Undertaking post graduate study between 1 January 2012 and 30 June 2012 at one of the post graduate midwifery schools, (Otago Polytechnic, Victoria University, Massey University or Auckland University of Technology) or undertaking papers in another discipline which will contribute towards an overall midwifery focused qualification
- Midwifery applicants who are undertaking one or two papers in another discipline will be eligible to have their applications considered if these papers are cross creditable towards a midwifery post graduate qualification. Proof will be required from the education provider that these papers are being undertaken as part of an overall midwifery focused qualification.
Grant applications are now invited. Application forms and information sheets are available to be downloaded from this webpage.
There will be two opportunities to apply for grants for Semester One study, depending on when applications are received and when midwives commence study. Please see the table below. NZCOM advises that we are disbursing a finite post graduate budget that has been determined by HWNZ and cannot guarantee that all applicants will be able to receive funding. We will be priortising applications on a first come first served basis i.e midwives whose applications meet the criteria who have their completed applications to NZCOM by the 20th of January deadline will have a higher likelihood of being successful in receiving funding.
If you are an employed midwife, we advise that you ensure that your employer is aware of your intention to undertake post graduate study in 2012.

HWNZ requires all health professionals who receive funding for post graduate education to have evidence of a documented Career Plan. All midwives applying for post graduate grants will therefore also be required to complete the Career Plan Template, as well as the necessary application form.
Applications will need to be accompanied by the following information:
- Evidence from the education provider that you have enrolled in the papers stated in the application form
- A copy of your fees statement from the education provider: i.e evidence of the exact amount of your fees
- A copy of a band deposit slip / bank account number that you would like the grant to be deposited into
- A completed career plan template
