Introducing the Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki

From 1 April 2017 the Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki becomes a legal entity. As of this date all current functions and responsibilities of Child, Youth and Family; the Ministry of Social Development’s Community Investment service; and the Children’s Action Plan will be transferred to Oranga Tamariki.

All documents that currently refer to Child, Youth and Family will still be operational. The State Sector Act covers consequential changes for a period of one year. Therefore planning will be required to ensure that all documents and associated forms are identified and updated to refer to Oranga Tamariki. To access the logo contact communications@cyf.govt.nz.

In legal documents the Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki (Oranga Tamariki) should be the reference used in the first instance and then Oranga Tamariki should be used subsequently.

New contact details

As a result of the establishment of Oranga Tamariki, contact details are also changing. Staff email addresses will be structured: firstname.lastname@mvcot.govt.nz (E-mails sent to existing email addresses will automatically come through to the new email address).

Reports of concern should still be made on the 0508 FAMILY (326459). However all emails should be sent to contact@mvcot.govt.nz (E-mails sent to existing email addresses will automatically come through to the new email address).

From 1 April 2017 the Oranga Tamariki website will be www.mvcot.govt.nz.

The age of care and protection will be raised to include 17 year olds, which means:

The legal definition of a young person under the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act now becomes “a boy or girl of or over the age of 14 years but under 18 years”. This means that Reports of Concern can now be made up to the age of 18, and all children and young people currently in the custody of the Chief Executive will be given the option of remaining in care until they turn 18.
