The College is contracted by Health Workforce New Zealand to provide a national programme, the Midwifery First Year of Practice (MFYP), to support newly graduated midwives transition into practice.

The College also holds a list of mentors for midwives who feel they would like additional support. Sometimes members working in isolated communities benefit from the support of a midwife mentor, as do midwives coming from overseas who may not have practised in a setting like New Zealand.

The Practicalities of Being a Mentor Midwife is a College-run workshop that provides midwives with strategies to consider when taking on a mentoring role.
