Welcome to the Professional Practice pages
The College is the professional body for midwives in New Zealand. Its purpose is to promote and enhance the profession of midwifery in order to ensure excellence in midwifery services to women and babies.
The College upholds the International Confederation of Midwives’ definition of the midwife’s role and scope of practice. It speaks nationally and regionally in the interests of midwives and promotes the health status of women and their families. It recognises Māori as Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa and honours the principles of equity, partnership, protection and participation as affirmation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Aotearoa New Zealand’s founding document.
The College determines the Philosophy, Code of Ethics and Standards of Midwifery Practice through a consultative process with the profession and consumers. The College has a role in developing, assessing and promoting midwifery education, as well as promoting research and the development of literature and resources in midwifery.
